Justice Cruz, Gay-Hater

Posted by kapanalig_sa_wala on Aug 23rd, 2006

It’s unfortunate that ex-Justice Isagani Cruz picked up his pen and wrote the article that is now stirring the local GLBT community. His gay-bashing column which appeared in the Inquirer August 12th is still getting a lot of feedback ten days after it came out and for good reasons. What he wrote is simply inexcusable coming from somebody who is expected to uphold the spirit of the law, he being a former associate justice of the Supreme Court. The Philippines, in all her imperfection is still a nation that guarantees equality and freedom for her people. Nowhere in our constitution is written that gays (and lesbians) are second class citizens. Where is he coming from? Whereever it is from, Mr. Cruz should go back to school and rethink his position. Of course he is entitled to his bigoted opinion. I just hope that the men and women now sitting in our courts are not as bigoted as he is when it comes to issues concerning the minorities, not only against people with a “queer” sexual orientation. A few days later, he came out with a defence as a sort of reply to a fellow columnist, a flimsy reason grounded on the principle that not all gays are equal. I join the GLBT community in condemning the POV that he represents, an obsolete and bigoted view on the issue of gay people.
